Are little smart cars worth buying?

I saw on the news a week or two ago about environment friendly cars that are supposedly fuel efficient. If you go to www.smartcar.com or, simply go to ask.com it will give all the history and technical information about it. But my concern centers around the idea of driving little cars with supersized cars. Also are these foreign cars just a fad? And, how expensive will they be when they arrive in the states? Lastly, has anyone actually bought one? If yes, what is your experiences with these cars? Price? Any advice about these European cars will be useful to me.

1. They're built by Mercedes (high quality) and despite their small size, they're extremely safe. Are foreign cars a fad? Is Toyota not the second best selling car in America for the last 10 years?
2. Lots of good information from smart car owners at www.clubsmartcar.ca I've had mine for a year and am very happy with it.
