Smart Fortwo cars already in the US?

I want one of those cars, but they don't get released until 2008, and a few people I know have already seen them on the road. Where did they get them?

1. the older versions are already out. they were available at the car lot when i was looking for my new car. my daughter wants one of those as well they are soooo cute and get such great gas milage.
2. If you see a Smart Fortwo car on the road it is either one of the cars that is on the publicity/demonstration tour around the USA or it is a Gray market car. A Gray market car is a car that was not made for sale in the USA, but has been converted by a licensed shop to meet all the EPA and DOT requirements. Sometimes you can find one on EBay. The conversion cost almost as much as the car. There are several on EBay right now, one for $18,999, one for $20,077 and one for $23,250. The Gray market cars are different from the made for USA cars.One other possibility is that the car is registered in Canada, Mexico or Europe and the driver is just on vacation touring around the good old USA seeing all our sights.
