What is the MOST fuel efficient, mid sized, mid priced car on the market today?

I want a new car. I don't want something tiny, but it certainly does not have to be big. I don't mind buying new and spending some cash - but not too much. What's the most fuel efficient car out there among mid-sized cars?

1. honda accord or honda civic both come in hybrid as well
2. The Cooper! They are not mid size, the wagon kinda is. It is a proven race and rally car, fuel consumption is much lower than the competitors. Subaru They have been making AWD cars since the 70s. I had a 1985 Subaru Wagon, pancake air cooled motor, AWD, 2wd, 4WD shifter. Car ran great for 10 years. 1975 VW Type 3 Wagon., cheap peeps porsche with cargo space. I ride a bicycle now. Making it solar powered now.
