Most fuel efficient least expensive car on market?

I am wanting to get a new car and have decided not to get another SUV. I want to get a reliable car that is fuel efficient. I would also like to keep the cost low. I would like to hear from people that are knowlegable about cars (mechanics, sales people, car lovers, etc.) on what type of car they would buy with the above characteristics. I should add that the reason for the cheap car at this time is to pay off being upside down quickly and then get the most fuel efficient SUV or bigger car.

2. the chevy aveo gets around 40 MPG and cost like $8,000...but you will sacrifice looks and space for the gas milage...thats your choice...big SUV to small cramped car would be a very hard crossover though...
