$2,500 NEW CAR - Why not sold in USA?

Tata Motors produced the worlds cheapest car with 59 mpg and is coming out with an all electric version. The 59mpg car has 4 seats. The American produced Smart car has only 2 seats and has terrible gas mileage. You could get the same mpg from a Smart car from a lot of big trucks and suv type vehicles in the usa right now. Why is this car not sold in the USA I am sick of this. Tata motors has a lot of cooler looking larger vehicles that are considerably cheaper than American models. The Tata nano 2,500 model meets all international standards. Why is it not sold in the US. WHY!?!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX64M_1qN0s The production model was "just intrduced" a year ago. It is being produced and sold all over Asia to include russia, and india.

  1. Smog reasons. Big oil companies wont let it come over here If you are sick of it and dont like it, try moving out of the U.S.A. and see how they quality of life is
  2. Because the Tata company has not been able to expand their product to other countries.
  3. it isn't sold ANYWHERE yet. It was announced in 2008, factory not built. It won't be sold until later this year. Repeat , It is not sold ANYWHERE, not even India. It will be sold in 2009. Just because Tata says it meets all standards doesn't mean it does. USA agencies need to test it ourselves. $2500 is the estimated dealer invoice price, not retail. let's wait a bit until it is a proven product before importing it " Tata said it would focus on the home market for two to three years before considering exports of the Nano to Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia. " tata in deep in debt because of the Landrover & jaguar purchase, no money for Nano.
  4. first off, the SMART car is a european product. the 59 mpg probably comes from a motor that wouldn't push my go-kart above 20mph and produces all kinds of nasty emissions. the $2500 means it's cheap because it's made out of cheap materials. YUGO anyone?
  5. Because in the United States we have things called Safety standards. I'd like to see what one of those tata's look like after colliding with a suburban.
  6. because its a piece of dog shit.
  7. 1. Emissions 2. Safty Standards
  8. When the Nano does go into production it wont be able to pass US crash testing. It is a very stripped down car to reduce parts count and cost. For example there are only 3 lug nuts on the wheels instead of the usual minimum of 4. Excessive comfort items are not included, it doesn't even have air bags. It is just a bare minimum car. If it were to be sold in the US it will have to have a speed governor to 25 MPH to make it safe enough.
